Oh Halloween Tree, Oh Halloween Tree!

I found this project on a blogger friends page (Liz. You can find her on my link list)....and fell in looove! It took about 3 weeks to find all that I needed to create it, but alas! It is complete! (actually, it has been complete for about 2 weeks, I've just been lazy about posting this pic on here!)

The Hurricane vase is Southern Living Home, putka pods from Michael's, branches from the backyard *spray painted black*, and pumpkin ornaments from TJMaxx. I looked everywhere for orange and black ball...with no luck....but I am very happy with my pumpkin heads! I do think I need to trim the strings though. Maybe tomorrow....

Do you know the pumpkin man??

Country Adventures '07

Last night we went to Country Adventures with the playgroup. For some reason in most of my pic there are little round orbs floating around.....maybe bugs?? Who knows? But I hope to steal some pics from some other friends that were there and post them later. The kids had a load of fun. Brooke was unpredictably tame, Bub roasted about 15 marshmallows *but didn't eat half of what he roasted*, Cody got sick, Trey almost fell in the firepit *you didn't hear it from me, Michelle!*, and I ate 1.5 burnt hotdogs! Fun, fun. If only it had been a bit colder....

Bub and Trey were trying to pet the pig when they got a whif of what the pig pen smelled like...HA!

I took about 5 pictures of Trey making this face.....everytime someone would say something to him, he'd open his mouth as if amazed. I thought it was pretty funny!

On the hay ride!

Mi chica, you chica~~everyone's a chica-chica!

Dunno what these two were doing. They were in their own little world most of the time.

The kids take turns "dressing" each other up. Some days I will go in the living room to find Bub dressed to the max as Tinkerbell.....maribou crown and all! Other times I will go down to find Brooke in saggy britches and a dirty white t-shirt with a gold chain around her neck(apparently their version of ghetto?!). One afternoon a few weeks ago, the kids came running into the living room dressed in their version of "farmers". I had to laugh because they reminded me more of the Green Acres version rather than the out in the boondocks kind. But was complete with overalls and a cane, Brooke....well, one look at that pose she was striking says it all. She is definitely NOT a hillbilly at heart.

scouts honor!

Brooke, as usual....right there in the middle of them all!

This is a pic of Bub trying to catch up with his friend Jack.
We decided to give scouts a go this year. Bub is now a Tiger Cub and Brooke is a Brownie! Along with blogging, I have been a bit slack on taking pictures.....so for now I only have pics of Bub's first hiking outing with his den. Hopefully I will remember my camera for Brooke's next meeting so I can get a few pics of her with her troop! We have a lot planned with both groups over the next few months so I am sure to get a few more pics in somewhere~

random thought

I am known for weird thoughts, aimless brain rambling.....not due to too much time on my hands.....but something I do to occupy my head when I am doing the mundane.

Tonight as I was loading the washer, Brooke asked me if I were given one wish, would I wish my world could start over. Random question from such a small child, I know.....but she quickly followed her question by her own answer....she told me that she would start hers all over just so she could see her grandma and remember her.....which gave me the answer to my immediate question, "WHY the heck was my daughter already wishing she could start all over!?" HA!

Naturally, there are a lot of things in my life that I wish I could do over again. Like many others, I wish I could go back to then knowing what I know NOW. The true irony of life is that we don't come with built in navigation systems. Each day is a mystery that presents us with another obstacle to manuveur around. In almost a chuckle from the universe, we are born and turned loose to figure it out.....and since we only get one chance......

While my mind was playing on this thought.....I wondered if we were ALL granted one wish, and used it all to start over again, knowing what we do now....would we get it right or are we bound, as HUMANS, to get it all wrong again...only to end up wishing, AGAIN, that we could do it all again?

Would everyone "get it right"? Would the world really be a better place because of it? Or would we be a new birthed Stepford world.....one in which we knod to each other in the mornings, go about doing the Necessities of life, keeping our homes and lives in order....never letting anyone get too close to mess up our ideal perfection? Exactly what kind of world would we live in if we all came equipped with the "I know then what I know now" chip? Is it one that I would REALLY want to live in? Would there BE any mystery..any pure fun?

Imagine if our kids came with a handbook......the mysterious journey of their childhood wrapped up in a tidy box? Would I really find joy in not being able to mess up, learn, try again....and get it right? Would I find any joy in the moment that Bub finally started pronouncing his "L's" if I already KNEW when he was going to start? Would I find any wonder in watching Brooke take off on her bicycle if I already knew WHEN she was going to do it?

As she often does, Brooke gave me a lot to think about tonight.....

So in answer to my little fairy......who tends to drop little glitter dust of the wonderment I call childhood innocence into my life when I hardly expect it....no baby, mommy wouldn't press the rewind button and change one thing. Because if I did, I couldn't promise you that I would be the mommy I am today....

Heading Home

More pics of the kids first day of school...only these are heading home pics! Brooke wanted to ride her bike home so I drove it down to her....but by the time she actually arrived home, she changed her mind about riding her bike to school.....it's too hot!!! She was dripping sweat and I had to agree with her.....we won't be riding bikes again until it cools off!!! I love the pic of the two of them walking across the street holding hands....I took that one before they saw me watching;) sneaky peeky mum!

First day of school

YAY!! Our first day went off without a hitch! The kids were super excited to get back to school and see their friends.....I was super excited to have them BACK in school so we can get back to our usual routine;) Summer is suppossed to be so relaxing and full of fun, leisurely days, but for some reason....this year wasn't one of them! I feel as if we've all been topsy-turvy for the past two months and no matter how hard I tried, we couldn't quite get in the groove of things. Hopefully starting this new school year will help get us back on track so we can get back to "normal!"

Here are some pictures of my babies....now in 1st and 2nd grade. As I walked out the door this morning, leaving my kiddos behind....my eyes fell on the little kindergarteners, and it dawned on me that my babies are no longer like those little kindergarten kids who are wide eyed and don't know what to expect from school....they are moving up, learning more each day.... I hope to hold on to these special years and cherish every moment of their innocence.

Girls day out

This past weekend was all about getting the kids ready for school. We spent a lot of the time doing last minute shopping, but managed to squeeze in some special one on one time with each of the kids before the big day! On Saturday, Brooke was with Courtney, so we took a ride over to Lexington to hunt for new golf shoes. We weren't able to find any in Bub's size....but we did get a good deal on Brandon's....75% off!!! We also went to the mall and Bub wanted to ride the carosel....then for his special back to school gift he got two new video games from game stop. After heading home so I could pick up Brooke, Bub and Brandon went to play golf.

Sunday, Brooke and I had a day of girl fun! We headed over to the village and Brooke got her first mani/pedi!!! She loved every second of being treated like the girly girl she is! From there, she bought a new pair of earrings and a cute tiki purse....then we ended our day with ice cream from Coldstone.

All in all, the weekend was a very good one....the kids were happy, mum and dad were pleased....and we were all set for school to start!

The house that we grew up in

They say you can never go back......

Each time I head back to Panama City for a visit, I make my rounds driving past the places that I once lived....the places that hold memories for me....the places that are still dear to my heart. It's nice to relive happy times. To remember the people we loved in the places in which they were once so alive.

One of the fondest places of my childhood is my granny's house. I grew up in this house. My brothers and I turned the crawlspace under granny's house into a playhouse of sorts. We would go on adventures and treasure hunts, finding old pots, pans, glass containers, and randomcar parts....once we even found hundreds of coins, mostly pennies, that were hidden there years before....by my own mom and her brothers. There were four intersecting pear trees in the backyard. We would climb in them and pretend we were in the deepest jungles of Africa, on a safari hunt for wild and exotic animals. Along the side of her house were a variety of trees and bushes....from a banana tree, to azaleas, pecan trees, fig trees, and elephant ears.

In the front corner of the yard was a small cement pond, that was empty most of the time. The walkway leading to the front porch was hemmed in by two leaning pecan trees and flowering cactus plants. We pretended that the cactus flowers held magical powers...since they only bloomed twice a year. Off to the left of the house stood a metal water heater....once upon a time they were lept outside the house I guess! We could pull limbs from a willow tree a stand on top of the tank, jump off and pretend we were flying. This home, our childhood playground....was protected by a chain link fence that surrounded the property.

As you walked up the brick steps that led to the wooden porch, you were encased by two cement plank like walkways that overlooked azalea bushes. On the porch to your right was an old cement tiled door....behind which was granny's pottery room....which wasn't really a pottery room anymore, just another place to hold mysterious treasures that would keep my brothers and I guessing at the contents to this day! To the far left of the porch was a wooden swing, attached to the house by metal chains and 2 large hooks anchored in the ceiling.

Walking through the door, the first thing you would see is a massive wood burning heater. I can still remember the smell....and the crackle the burning wood produced. My brothers and I would fight over who was going to add more wood when the door was opened. I remember the old, green, soft, felt like carpeting in the living room....and the bookcases that marked the entrance to the dining room. These bookcases were probably one of the biggest contributors to my love of reading. From these built in bookshelves with metal locking clasps came Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and Melville's, "Moby Dick"...the first two "classics" that ever caught my attention. Inside were also old school books that were used by my great uncles and my own grandmother.....my mom's mother whom I had never met. These bookshelves were the best part of granny's house.

Keep walking....and you see a china cabinet to your right (the same that now sits in my formal dining room) and a small table that held the phone and the *very skinny!) phone book. Also in the dining room was a matching hutch that held shiny silverware and extra hand towels. There were two exits from the dining room. The one on your right led to the only bathroom in the house, to granny and papa's room, and to the refridgerator. The one to the left led to the kitchen......and to the laundry/storage room.

I will skip all but granny's room. A massive bedroom that held a king sized bed, a sewing room, a wall mounted space heater, and her beloved TV. My fondest memories of this room are of granny yelling at the wrestlers on TV and watching the Macy's Christmas parade with her. To the back of the room was a massive closet....a closet that I never dared to look into. My papa died when I was 5...maybe 6...and she told me that even though he'd died.....he was still with us. A saying that I totally understand now...but at the time, I thought it meant that she was hiding him away in the deep recesses of that never ending closet!

Last Thanksgiving, we went home for the holiday. I'd gone to pick up a pint of oysters from my favorite spot and decided to drive past granny's old house. The house had been sold years before after my grandmother died...and I knew that the people who'd bought it had done some major renovations. I'd always been curious as to how the house looked like inside...since the front looked much the same, minus the pottery room. For some reason I had a wild hair and decided to stop and take a picture.....for memories sake. As I was taking the picture, a man came out...so I decided to brave it up and ask if I could look around. I explained who I was and he was more than happy to let me take a look around. I was amazed at the difference!

I was even more amazed to find that my beloved bookcases were still there.....with the original hardware! Everything else was so different....but so much the same. This home of my childhood didn't fail to bring tears to my eyes....especially when the man told me that a woman that looked like me had come by several years ago and asked if she could do the same. The woman told him that she'd grown up in this house and had raised her children here as well.....I knew that he spoke of none other than my mom.

As I climbed back into the car, I broke down into tears. This place that had meant so much to me...and to my mom....to know that she had visited before she died....made me cry and smile at the same time. I am glad I have the memories that this old house gave me.....happy that I now have pictures of it to share with my children. I can only hope that someday this home we make for them will give them the same warm, happy feeling in return.
